Tech Term: Modems and Routers

The internet is a valuable tool that can be accessed either through a wired connection or wirelessly via Wi-Fi. The devices that provide these connections can be somewhat complicated and difficult to understand. If you don’t know which device does what, here’s a helpful guide to the differences between modems and routers.

While modems and routers work together to provide a wireless network, they are two completed different devices.

What Does a Modem Do?

A modem is a device that connects your local network to your internet service provider. It’s the gateway to your internet connection. It allows for a constant connection to the internet without any type of filtering.

What Does a Router Do?

The router is a device that bridges the gap between devices on your network and the internet. This can be done through either a wired or a wireless network. Routers often feature security features that can keep external threats from entering your infrastructure as well, but this is mostly on a fundamental level, rather than a comprehensive one.

If you rely on a wired connection with the modem (via a cable), you don’t need a router to access the internet.

Do I Need a Modem and a Router?

Whether you need both a modem and a router will depend on how you and your team need to access your network. If multiple devices will need internet access, and if you want wireless connection capabilities, you will typically need a modem and a router. In contrast, if only one device will be connecting to the internet via a wired connection, then you can likely get away with just having a modem.

What About Combination Modems and Routers?

There’s usually an option to consolidate modems and routers into the same device. However, these combination devices can limit the functionality of your network. You may not have as much control and flexibility with your networking components as you may if you have a standalone modem and router.
